I want to explain the name of Thursday's masterclass, because once you see it, you can't really unsee it.

Filing your taxes is driving with the rearview mirror.

Your CPA takes everything that already happened last year, puts it on the right forms, and reports it to the IRS. That's important work, and it has to be done right.

But by the time anyone looks at it, the year's over. The income came in the way it came in. The property got bought, or it didn't. The money went where it went.

Planning is looking through the windshield. You look at what's coming, and you change your facts before December 31, while they can still be changed.

Most high earners have only ever been offered the rearview mirror.

And I want to be fair here, because people get protective of their CPA, and I understand that. Your CPA probably isn't a bad person. Most CPAs were trained to file, not to plan.

The part that surprises people is where the big savings actually come from.

It's usually not some write-off you forgot. It's how your income is classified, where it's routed, and what you change before the year ends.

One of our clients, Tyler, is an orthopedic surgeon. When he came to us he was paying $232,000 a year in tax, and his old CPA had told him he made too much money for real estate to do anything for him.

It turned out one of his K-1s was being filed the wrong way, and fixing it was one of the first things we did.

I'll show you exactly what happened on Thursday. It's the first pillar, Reclassify, and it's the one most CPAs never check.

I want to tell you something a little embarrassing.

I was the first person in my family to land a six-figure job. Big 4 accounting firm, by the time I was 27.

I worked with real estate developers, investors and very wealthy families, and for those people, tax planning was just part of everyday life. They didn't wait until April to find out what they owed. They decided it ahead of time.

Everyone else filed.

I watched that two-tier system up close, and I still told myself planning was for someone else. Not for people like me.

So I paid a ton in taxes, as an accountant at one of the biggest firms in the country.

Later I moved into corporate tax, and honestly, I felt like I was getting dumber. Some of my old interns were passing me.

Then in my late 20s my dad got very sick. I took care of him, and it hit me hard that if I stopped working, I stopped getting paid. Matt and I were trying to start a family at the same time.

That's when we started doing for ourselves what I'd watched my wealthy clients do for years.

We house hacked our first home. Then, during the crash, we bought a rental in Las Vegas, sight unseen. I remember wiring that money and thinking I was going to have a heart attack.

Matt and I started Keystone around one idea. Every client gets planning, not just filing. Not one version of the tax code for the wealthy and a different version for everyone else.

Over 20 years and more than a thousand clients later, we still run it that way.

I'm telling you this because you might be where I was. Doing well, paying a lot, and quietly assuming the planning stuff is for people with more money or more time than you've got.

It isn't, and on Thursday Matt and I are going to show you exactly what we do for our clients, in plain English.

I want you to meet a couple before Thursday, because their story touches all three parts of the masterclass.

They're both physicians. Together they earn about $1.5 million a year, and when they came to us, they were losing $542,000 a year to taxes.

That's more than most families earn in a year, going out the door on top of all the hours they were already working.

They didn't want to quit. They didn't want to become real estate professionals. And they definitely didn't want anything complicated or in the gray area.

So we made three moves.

Redirect. One of them had income coming in on a K-1. We ran it through an S corp and used the PTE tax break, and that alone saved them more than $83,000. They already had their 401(k)s too, so we added a defined benefit plan on top, which moved an extra $196,000 into retirement instead of to the IRS.

Shelter. They bought one short-term rental. It was an $800,000 property with $160,000 down and about $50,000 to furnish, and it produced about $282,000 of depreciation in the first year.

All together, their tax bill came down by over $237,000. They kept the same jobs and the same income.

The question I always get at this point is, "Okay, but how can a rental lower the tax on a W-2 salary? I thought you couldn't do that."

For most rentals, you're right, the losses get stuck. But a short-term rental that you materially participate in is treated differently. And since the One Big Beautiful Bill permanently brought back 100% bonus depreciation last year, the first-year numbers can be really big.

I'll walk through exactly how that works on Thursday, including the timing, because when you buy and when the property's ready to rent makes a huge difference.

No. Real estate professional status is one option, and it's a great one for some households, but you don't need it for most of what we'll show you.

One of our clients bought a duplex with $20,000 down. They lived in one unit and short-term rented the other, met material participation through the 100-hour rule, and that one property gave them close to $80,000 in write-offs. They kept their W-2 job the whole time.

"Is this aggressive? Am I going to get audited?"

I get why people ask. There's a lot of nonsense online right now, like "pay zero tax" and "write off your Lambo," and I've been debunking a lot of it on my Instagram.

Everything we're teaching tomorrow is written into the tax code: cost segregation, bonus depreciation, defined benefit plans, S corps, how a K-1 gets classified. Done right and documented right, it's IRS-compliant. Nothing in the gray area.

"My CPA is good. Wouldn't they have caught this?"

Maybe not, and it's usually because nobody asked them to look. Most CPAs are trained to file what happened, accurately and on time. Planning is a different job.

One of our clients, Adriana Braciak, wrote in her review that our team "identified key mistakes in my previous tax filing that my current CPA had made."

"I'm W-2 only. Is any of this for me?"

Yes. One couple came to us earning over $746,000, all W-2. They bought their first short-term rental, about $900,000, and it created a $440,995 tax loss. Their estimated taxes went from $220,832 to $64,959.

That's $155,873 they got to keep.
